What is Studio Kokyu’s new project about?
Can happiness be programmed? Is there a formula that allows a human being to achieve fulfillment? Or does every attempt to find it push us further away from what we are truly looking for?
“Algorithm: Happiness” is a new theatrical project by Studio Kokyu, inspired by, among other things, Aldous Huxley’s reflections in the novel “Brave New World” and the essay “Brave New World Revisited.” The starting point for the play is the question of contemporary ways of shaping human desires, needs, and ideas of happiness.
We live in a world that constantly tells us what we should desire, how we should look, what we should think, how we should live, and what we should do to achieve happiness. The development of technology, social media, artificial intelligence, and increasingly advanced influence mechanisms makes the question of freedom of choice more relevant today than ever before.
However, the creators of the project are primarily interested not in technology, but in the human being—the way we experience the world, build relationships, navigate freedom, loneliness, closeness, and loss, and how we give meaning to our own lives.
The material for the play is created through acting work, improvisation, literary texts, and answers collected via a survey (distributed in five languages: English, Spanish, Italian, Belarusian, and Polish) regarding happiness, freedom, love, loneliness, and the meaning of life. In the creative process, philosophical reflection, the personal experiences of the performers, and inspirations drawn from nature, literature, and contemporary culture all come together.
“Algorithm: Happiness” is not an attempt to provide a definitive answer. It is an invitation to experience these questions together.
What is happiness? Is it a choice, a state, an experience, a memory, a relationship, or perhaps just a word we use to try and name something that escapes definitions?
We do not know the answers. That is exactly why this play is being created.
